Pablo Ureta Interviews

February6

Mention adventure racing in Argentina, and it is likely Pablo Ureta’s name will come up.

The Argentinian, swiss-resident Pablo Ureta is an amazing endurance athlete. After making a name for himself in the Ironman series, mountain biking, triathlons and road cycling fields, Pablo entered his first adventure race in 2002.

In the wonderful landspace of Argentina Pablo is now doing his fifth Columbia Cruce de los Andes!

A month ago he was in Switzerland getting ready to start the university  and decided  to escape a few weeks to Argentina looking for good weather and new adventures. He choose one more time The “Columbia Cruce de los Andes”, a great adventure race in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

“I’m a little bit tired, but I love this race. The place is amazing. I have to say that today we went really fast and it was longer than what I thougt.  One of the great things about adventure racing is that you challenge your patience and your personality. But most of all, you go to places you’ve never been before.” …”The Columbia Cruce de los Andes is a three day race and the race is not over, we have a lot to come. The firt day you don’t win nor you don’t loose. Now we have to get rest, drink some mates and get ready for tomorrow” said Pablo.

Cruce de Los Andes 2009 : Part III

February2

Last year the Cruce was amazing like every year I raced! I did not have a partner and a good friend of mine “Ramiro Paris” told me he may know somebody that would race with me. Peter Vail from Canada was my partner, a fast guy: 2°21’ for the marathon! Ramiro and Peter climbed the Aconcagua a couple of days after the race.

Volcan Pucon

Esteban, Ramiro, Pablo, Manuel and Peter before the race

The race started in San Martin de Los Andes. I stayed there with some friends that used to live in Cordoba.

The first stage was hard but amazing. We run most of the time with Ramiro Paris and Julian Peralta. The last 8 km were down hill and we made a difference. We won the first stage.

Running down the Volcano

Cruzando un arroyo

The second day was the harder for me, most of the course was flat and we run on the road. When your partner runs a marathon in 2°21’ it’s hard… We got lost and we lose a couple of minutes too. We finished 5th and we were 4th overall.

The last stage was my favourite one. Up, down, up, down. It was the longest one, we run 41 km. I felt great up in the mountains and I enjoyed the course a lot. We finished 3er on that stage and 3er overall.

Peter and me after the second day

Finish line: first stage

Thank you Peter for coming and racing with me. It was great meeting you and I’m looking forward to see you.

It was a great experience. I love the race, the places where we run, and the time we spend up in the mountains after each stage. We did camp with Ramiro, Julian, Manuel and Esteban.

I think you know better somebody when you spend time in the most challenging moments. I had the chance to race shoulder to shoulder against Ramiro and I admire and I respect him so much. He is one of the fastest marathon runners in Argentina and he is an excellent person. He is a gentleman! I would love to have the opportunity to race with him ones!

Ironman Frankfurt to celebrate my 20th ironman

January21

I’m so excited about racing in Frankfurt again! Why?

  • Because I love that race
  • Is the most competitive ironman race after Hawaii
  • It’s going to be my 20th ironman, the 4th time in Frankfurt
  • And I will try to get the Kona slot. If I qualify for Kona; it would be the 10th time I in my career

The start

Esperando la partida

Frankfurt at night

Finish at midnight

I remember being in a cyber café in Australia with my friends Chiara and Nico. We wanted to sign up for Frankfurt. We were online ready to sign up but we had problems and we could not enter in the race. The race was full booked in a couple of minutes. I was so disappointed but I never stopped believing. I knew I will race in Frankfurt.

When I have something in my mind I try the impossible to do it and I never give up!

Last Friday, there were a couple of slots online and I could sign up and now I’m in!!!!!!!

Last time I raced in Frankfurt was in 2008. A couple of my best friends from all over the world came to support me: Melania from Costa Rica, Fede from Italy, Rohan from South Africa, Kris from Hungary, Patric from Switzerland who raced too, Marce and my brother from Argentina. We were 8 in the room and we had 3 beds but we figured it out and we slept well. My friends make my life beautiful and I enjoy racing much more when they are with me.

Marce, yo y Patric

I participated 3 times at the ironman Frankfurt and I always had amazing races. In 2008 I finished in 9°11’ and I got my Kona slot. This year I will try really hard to do better. I already started training; I just need to buy a good bike and I’m ready for it.

I’m motivated for this year more than ever before. I want to go back to Kona but not only for the ironman. I miss my Hawaiian family, my friends, and a special friend….. I feel at home in Kona and I’m sure I will be there soon.

Now is time to work hard, train smart and go through every step to be ready on July 4th

Hasta la próxima!

Racing in the Arctic Circle!!!

December3

I love ultra marathon races and next year I will have the opportunity to race in another amazing place. The North of Sweden will be the place for the 110 km running race (www.fjallraven.com). The start is in Nikkaluokta and the finish is in the Abisko Sweden national park, 200 km North from the Arctic Circle.

The race course

The race course

Raúl Cebrian invited me for that race. I will be racing for www.pampastravel.se and for www.caminosvikingos.com. They are my sponsors, my logistic during the race and my friends. I’m so happy they will give the opportunity to travel and race in Sweden. I will train hard to do the best for my team and sponsors!

Surrr

The place looks gorgeous. The weather and the distance could make the race really tough. It’s a challenge and I love it!

In summer you can see the midnight sun and the aurora borealis; those are natural lights generally seeing at night.

The race location, North of the Artic Circle, will give us the opportunity to race 24 hours day light, no night!!!

Ironman Cozumel to support Bree and Oscar! I’m not racing this time!

November26

I’m enjoying this paradisiacal island and getting ready to help my friends as much as I can during the ironman! I may have a media pass (thanks Travis and Bree).

I will be taking pictures for the triathlete magazine before, during and after the race.

It’s so different to come to watch an ironman, it’s going to be the second time in my life after ironman Switzerland in 1998 and I like it too. However I would rather race… Today I run 1°30’ and I felt good but I will safe energy for next year.

Pablo

Bree is feeling great, she is ready to race. I have been training with her for a while and she is strong. Hope she has a fantastic race!

Oscar Galindez is racing too. He is a top contender for the win! Hope he has a great race too and be back in Kona next year!

Training in Florida and getting ready for Cozumel !

November25

I have been in Florida almost four weeks. I spent time in Miami with Lily and Edwin and some time with Bree at her family’s house.  I had a great time. Training has been going really well, even though it was only a little as I am still recovering from Ironman Panama City.

Pools in Florida

Pools in Florida

Bree and me before swim practice

Bree and me before swim practice

I’m impressed with the swimming facilities here in Florida, amazing.  Huge pools with nobody swimming. For example, our last swim was at a 19 lane pool with 2 people. I would love to have a pool like that in Switzerland or Argentina. Florida also has rivers that push you to go faster if you do not want to be eating by a crocodile.  However, the bike ride is much better in Cordoba or Fribourg for somebody that loves hills. The only way to go up and down here are the bridges, speed bumps, and the steps at the buildings

You better swim fast

Maybe the hardest and funniest workout this week was the interval and speed training. We did a steep up hill and a crazy down hill at almost 120 km/h. It was in a roller coaster at Bush Gardens.

It continues to amaze me how many great people you can find in the world. In every little town, in every country, in every culture you find special people.  In this Florida adventure I want to extend a big thank you to Edwin, Lily, and Bree and her family, and my ironman Florida team: www.eltrainer.us .

Now is time to pack, get ready and take the plane to Mexico!

Ironman Cozumel : Racing, Volunteering or Supporting my friends?

November19

I already booked my flight for Cozumel, Mexico! I’m so excited; it’s going to be my first time in Mexico!!! Another country, another culture and the opportunity to meet people and discover new places!

Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The 29th of November Cozumel will host for the first time an ironman.

I should be back in Switzerland now but decided to stay a couple more weeks in Florida and flight to Cozumel for the race. Should I race or just be a volunteer and support my friends ? There is only one answer: time will decide…. Never say never!!  you never know what is going to happen…

After my race in Panama City I returned to Miami with the dream team. What a great group, friends from everywhere but with the same passion “triathlon”. Miami was great. It was supposed to be an easy week without any training but I love racing and I found myself racing the 10km in Key Biscayne.

Edwin and Lily told me about the Lighthouse run race and I had to go….

It was a 10km in Key Biscayne, Miami. The race was well organised in a beautiful course. My legs were still sort from ironman one week before but it was fun. I finished 3er overall and won my age group.
